Some think so.
The American Medical Association Alliance is fighting for any Hollywood flick to feature smoking scenes to have an ‘R’ rating, citing research that kids pick up on movie stars’ habits.
Mmhmm. I recommend a viewing of Thank You for Smoking, an excellent movie starring Aaron Eckhart.
By no means am I endorsing the use of tobacco. I just don’t understand the reasoning of the AMAA.
Rather than dwell on the stupidity of such a policy, I’d rather like to point out some movies that, off the top of my head, would be rated R for such scenes (and don’t deserve to be).
- Clue - Let Ms. Scarlett be.
- Titanic – Smoking is the last thing on the passengers’ minds.
- Independence Day - The fat lady sung.
- Pinocchio – Is it legal for Disney to produce an R movie?
- Grease - John Travolta really is a bad influence.
- The Producers – Uma smokes, right?
- Thank You for Smoking – Perhaps it’s obvious, but the satire is appropriate.
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine – What’s with comic book heroes these days?
- The Sandlot – The kids chew tobacco. And then vomit.
- Angels and Demons – Even Vatican workers need to smoke.
- Trading Mom - Does anyone remember this movie? Well, one of the moms smokes.
- A League of their Own - Madonna takes a puff or two.
- Ocean’s Eleven (1960) – They make smoking look soooo cool.
Have any more to add?

Ahhh…nice ones. Who knew Disney was so pro-tobacco?
OK, just kidding. I still just don’t understand the argument, especially since cigarettes are legal. The real reason for youths smoking — when you can’t have something, you want it more.

The Hollyweird libs are at it again.
There is NO END to what they will come up with to keep their wacko ideas before the populace. And….the media gives them all the attention they DON’T deserve!!!!!!
And….like Oprah….people fall for all their “horse pucky” ideas. How sad!

If the lobbyists position was to be applied else where, couldn’t one argue that putting coffee in movies encourages caffeine addiction, or seeing fancy cars encourages people go out and buy these fancy cars. These people are completely ignoring any chance that we (the movie-goers) have minds of our own and are not all mindless sheep. The real solution is proper education on tobacco/drugs/whatever their issue will continue to be because, honestly, we really don’t live in a monkey-see, monkey-do world like they seem to think.
To quote Mr. Spock “Their logic is severely flawed.”
